Recent events of killings of Palestinians by the Israeli government as well as the recent protests taking place against the Israeli State have sparked renewed media attention on Palestine. However, unless there are specific events Western media often keep silent about the continuous Israeli system of apartheid and the ongoing oppression of Palestinians. Even when they do pay attention to specific events, they are often presented as unsolvable ‘cycles of violence’ or as ‘religious clashes’, thereby denying the structural mechanisms that are at play: oppression, discrimination and ethnic cleansing of Palestinian civilians by the State of Israel.

With this event Kif Kif offers a platform for dialogue and discussion.

We will start with the screening ‘The Present’, a short film about a father and daughter in the Palestinian enclaves of the Israeli- occupied West-Bank. The screening will be a starting point for conversations about the daily reality and experiences of inhabitants of Palestine, which includes checkpoints, the apartheid wall and the separation of families. From there we will discuss more in-depth the different mechanisms of oppression and power relations in the region and the role of geopolitics in this oppression. This includes the involvement of the Belgian state in the conflict while often denying asylum to Palestinians who fled to Belgium. We will situate the discussion in a broader context of human rights, (in)equalities and (anti)racism and will discuss contributions to possible solutions, through various questions: can the international community contribute to peace and justice? What can we do as civil society organizations and initiatives? What can we do as activists?

De recente gebeurtenissen van dodelijke aanvallen op Palestijnen door de Israëlische staat en de recente protesten tegen de Israëlische staat hebben opnieuw de aandacht van de media op Palestina gevestigd. Tenzij er specifieke gebeurtenissen zijn, echter, zwijgen de westerse media vaak over de voortdurende apartheidssystemen tegen en de voortdurende onderdrukking van de Palestijnen. Zelfs wanneer zij wel aandacht besteden aan specifieke gebeurtenissen, worden deze vaak voorgesteld als onoplosbare "geweldscycli" of als "religieuze botsingen", waardoor de structurele mechanismen die in het spel zijn worden ontkend: onderdrukking, discriminatie en etnische zuivering van Palestijnse burgers door de staat Israël.

Met deze activiteit biedt Kif Kif een platform voor dialoog en discussie.

We beginnen met de vertoning van de film 'The Present', een korte film over een vader en dochter in de Palestijnse nederzettingen van de door Israël bezette West-Bank. De filmvertoning zal een startpunt zijn voor gesprekken over de dagelijkse realiteit en ervaringen van inwoners van Palestina, waaronder checkpoints, het leven in een open gevangenis, en de scheiding van families. Van daaruit gaan we dieper in op de verschillende mechanismen van onderdrukking en machtsverhoudingen in de regio en de rol van geopolitiek in deze onderdrukking. Dit omvat de betrokkenheid van de Belgische staat in het conflict terwijl ze vaak asiel weigert aan Palestijnen die naar België zijn gevlucht. We zullen de discussie situeren in een bredere context van mensenrechten, (on)gelijkheid en (anti)racisme en mogelijke oplossingen bespreken aan de hand van verschillende vragen: kan de internationale gemeenschap bijdragen tot vrede en rechtvaardigheid? Wat kunnen we doen als middenveldorganisaties? Wat kunnen we doen als activisten?
