Ph.D. Position in Legged Robotics and Manipulation, KU Leuven, Belgium (ref. BAP-2023-34)

This project will be hosted in the Mechanical Engineering department in the Robotics, Automation, and Mechatronics unit.

Project

The project centers around legged robots equipped with arms and hands. This research features a mix of fundamental and application relevant aspects. We aim to develop robots and their controllers to establish reliable and versatile interactions with humans and with our everyday environment. The project will build on our previous two- and four-legged robot projects, such as the BirdBot robot, Ecowalker robot, MORTI robot, and ODRI/SOLO-legged robot. Additional open-source solutions for robotic arms and hands will be integrated. We value applying and developing open, affordable, and easy-to-access hardware/software solutions that all members of our society benefit from.

Profile

The successful candidate must have a Master's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field. Fluency in at least one common computer programming language is required. English fluency is expected. The candidate must demonstrate their ability and aptitude for teaching assistance work, with a degree or transcripts of courses relevant to Mechanical Engineering. A background and/or hands-on experience in mechanical design and control is an advantage.

 

Offer

The position is fully funded. The position becomes available pending formal administrative approval, requiring enrolment in the university Ph.D. program. After a one-year evaluation period, the contract can be extended to four years. We provide access to state-of-the-art facilities.
